Book Spoiler-The maenad
What did those of you who have read the books think of the maenad? In the books the maenad was a naked woman with a wild boar, but in the show it was a slimy bull headed creature? 
Do you think that Maryann could be the maenad and be like some kind of shape shifter thing? Because she has the boar all she is missing is the bulls head. It kind of bugged me that the maenad wasn’t a woman because Sam hooks up with the maenad in the book and on the show Sam could definitely use some loving. But then again if the maenad is in fact Daphne, because she had some maenad looking scratches on her back then our little Sam may get some loving because they were going to swim in the lake together. Be it Daphne, Maryann or some unknown person/character to us I think we can all agree that when Dr. Ludwig was doctoring Sookie’s back that those were some looking scratches. Stay out of the woods at night boys and girls

Here’s an idea: Maryanne is the weird creature that scratched Sookie, and Daphne was obviously scratched and poisened by her at some point, so maybe Daphne is under her control/ working with Maryanne? Perhaps that is why Maryanne has pretty much left Sam alone for the past couple of days….because he is under the eye of the innocent-looking Daphne. Hmmm, I don’t know, I just wish they would explain it already! I’m tired of wondering what Maryanne’s angle is and why the people around her keep getting all weird and black-eyed. Why is she so interested in Tara?
Maryann has to be the maenad. When Tara was drunk in that red dress, she crashed her car into a tree after seeing a ‘naked woman with a pig’ in her way. That woman turned out to be Maryann. I then looked up the definition of a maenad (I’d never heard that word before) and Wikipedia says a maenad is:
“Their name literally translates as “raving ones”. Often the maenads were portrayed as inspired by him into a state of ecstatic frenzy, through a combination of dancing and drunken intoxication.[1] In this state, they would lose all self control, begin shouting excitedly, engage in uncontrolled sexual behavior, and ritualistically hunt down and tear animals (and sometimes men and children) to pieces, devouring the raw flesh. During these rites, the maenads would dress in fawn skins”
That sounds a lot like what happens whenever Maryann is around- like at Merlott’s and at her party- everyone went crazy dancing, their eye turned black and they started getting really raunchy with each other. It’s gotta be her. And when it says ‘they dress up in fawn skins’ she can probably turn herself into that… thing. She had a picture of a fawn next to her pool that she talked to Tara about. I’ll bet she can morph just like Sam. She probably hates Sookie for trying to take Tara away from her.
It is so confusing who is the maenad but think, yes Maryann was naked and had a pig, but Sam hooks up with the maenad in the book, and Daphne is for sure pulling moves on him, and if she had been scratched by the maenad she would be dead unless she is the maenad.
Could it be that they are deviating from the books just a bit? It’s pretty obvious that Maryann is the maenad…but does that mean Sookie was attacked by the maenad? Maybe there is a second creature…some sort of twist to keep us all guessing.
That’s true, I recall in season 1 a mentioning of werewolves, maybe Daphne is a werewolf.

Just ordered the first 7 books…. hopefully it doesn’t ruin the show.. hate knowing what is going to happen… Has anyone read the books? I saw mixed reviews on amazon…
If you hate knowing what will happen, you should just read the first book since season 1 followed it. I predict you’ll be HOOKED and read all the books asap. TB follows the books but not closely. Fun, quick,and easy read. The fact that Alan Ball went crazy for them is a pretty good review.

Ummm Sam did hook up with Maryanne, if you all remember. In season one when he comes into her house. Thats how he met maryanne in the first place. He came into her house and ate her food as a dog and then they had sex, and she started shifting into the bullheaded creature.

Does Maryanne kill everytime someone after she changes into that creature? Well trying to kill….(Daphne is still alive even thoug she has scratches)…
If you read the books you would know that MaryAnn is the maenad. She is a follower of the God Dionysus. Maenad’s enjoy drunken intoxication and sex. I am not sure how Daphne fits in to this because she was not in the books. I do feel that she is a maenad as well working for Maryann to get Sam’s attention so she can get Tara back.
I wonder if Maryann killed Ms. Jenean because her autopsy showed she had those scratches too.
Its 12am and I woke up wanting to comment on True Blood… I just gotta know what Mary Ann’s interest in Tara is. Are there any clues or hints that I’ve missed?
If maryanne is a maenad, then she is attracted to Tara for the problems in her life…..Maenads are like attracted to drunks, and sex, and fear, and chaos……
Maybe maryann scratched ms jeaneTte to have her under her control\working for her and made her perform the fake exorcisms
And maybe eggs is scratched by her too so he tries to get tara to stick around. She wanted to scratch sookie so she could have her take back her invite for tara to move in with her
I duno Ms Jeanette’s scratches were fresh…..and in season 1 you learn she does the fake exorcisms for extra cash to support her kids and grandkids…..as for eggs….you see him shirtless and no scars seen yet….but i definately thing that Maryanne is pushing the two together (Tara and Eggs) and their strong passion for eachother somehow gives her strength…..BUt I am pretty sure the maenad aka Maryanne only scratches to kill…….
I think that Daphne is the pig (also a shapeshifter) and she is working with/for Maryanne.
I don’t think Daphne is a shifter…Sam would have smelled it on her.
Don’t the maenad scratches just paralyze, like the tiny doctor said when she was looking at sookie’s back.
Is it possible that Daphney was attacked but the maenad got scared off, it didnt seem to like it when bill arrived to save sookie.
Ooh i just thought, perhaps Maryanne doesnt like Daphney because her and sam were kissing at terra’s party???
Does anyone else think that Maryanne’s butler is the pig, because she can control shapeshifters and she seems to be able to tell the butler whatever she wants.
And whats going to happen with La Feyette (however you spell it) apparently he dies in the books so he has to be still alive for some reason. I hope he gets turned into a vampire, he would be so badass!!!
i’ve always thought the butler was the pig… but i cant seem to figure out the reason of making tara wreck and getting to sam when shes not doing anything but paranoying him..and now daphnees a shapeshifter so im just really confused now, but i LOVE the intrest i have 4 the show..im glad i havent read the books, because i dnt wanna have any clue of the next episode
In the book it is explained that the maenad feeds off certain emotions — like tara being drunk and upset…maybe she sensed the vulnerability from tara and new she could use her to get “high” so to speak off her strong emotions? With Sam I think there is a greater plan in the works she is going after things he cares about…his bar, his customers, his ex, his friends…I think its about teaching him a lesson for betraying her early in life…
Maenads NEED offerings. Anyone supernatural who owns or runs a bar MUST make offerings to them (even vampires). Maenads worships Dionysus (Pan) and have simular attributes.
