OMG i cried; when it comes to good characters dying i always end up in tears and then seeing eric like tht was hot and sad at the same time lol but anyways i loved this episode and Bill is actually starting to get on my nerves and i am rooting for sookie and eric more and more each day
In Episode 9, True Blood was all about plunging us deeper into our favorite characters. The agony was palpable this week as Alan Ball and Co. needled and poked the residents of Bon Temps and Dallas. Last week, we discovered Jessica’s physical anomaly. This week, Hoyt’s mother brought the whole darn thing home by dragging Jessica’s infertility into the fore, perhaps shedding a burning light on a painful fact that Jessica might not have even realized herself yet. Those moments alone could have carried the show’s emotional weight, but no…
Bill’s jealousy and anger was aroused as Sookie found herself in the (un?)enviable position of straddling Eric and sucking at his neck and chest, much to her own mortification. Her nighttime “Eric-Blood” induced fantasies showed us all a glimpse of an Eric we could actually like.
Godric, in an effort to atone for his millenia of misdeeds, decides to meet the sun. While some of us haven’t had the time to connect to his character, his end is beautiful and dramatic, the drama heightened by an unexpected emotional outburst from Eric, who sobs and begs for Godric to choose life. It was almost enough to make you wish you hadn’t softened to the big Viking. His anguish made us weep, and made us want to know more. And THAT, is what makes a fantastic show.
WOW such a good revision. You blasted!
I have to agree with memnoch_meg…. there was something about this episode that set it apart from the others.
Mostly, I think it had to do with the issues addressed and the depth of character that was revealed on several levels
1) It was nice to see Sookie and Jason actually working on a relationship with each other. Most of the time, the emphasis is on Sookie’s love/vampire life, so seeing her trying to build a better relationship with her brother really gave the episode an extra step up.
2) I liked finally meeting the blondie from TV. She is spunky and surprisingly funny (I loved her facial expression when the Newmans began to argue on TV… the frustrated and slightly incredulous expression was so well done)
3) Who is not falling in love with Hoyt and Jessica? Their problems are more down to earth and therefore more relatable to the audience (aside from the vampire thing and the immortal virgin thing, of course). When Hoyt offered to sing Jessica to sleep, I swear he became one of the sexiest men I’ve ever seen for a second. I mean sure, you can look smokin and act tough (remind you of anyone?) but kindness and true love like that beats good looks any day, hands down.
3) And while it was heartbreaking to see Eric literally beg on his knees for Godric’s life, it was so REFRESHING to see a deeper side of the I’m-the-hot-and-sexy-bad-boy-who’s-just-looking-for-trouble. The effect was so much more potent than when we saw him giving himself up for Godric in the church last episode….. we as the audience knew he was devoted to Godric so it wasn’t much of a shocker that he would willingly burn for him…… he would have simply ended up looking self-sacrificing…. But here, he completely opens himself up and SOBS. Totally unexpected, and right on the mark
Job well done.
memnoch_meg & Victoriathevamp have definetly taken the cake on reviews here…but I mean….I am VERY saddened and equally discontented that Godric’s preasance was so shortlived, and his demise, I wanted MORE of a bang…when a vampire of his stature, power, age, and general aewsomeness for lack of a better word there…sacrifices himself, shouldn’t we see more than a flash of light?
When he said “After 2000 years and I can still be surprised, in this I see God”…that got me….and I was HOPING that since he realized he could still be surprised…then perhaps he’d give immortality another go.
so damn upset they gave us such a tease of Godric. I thought I was in love with Bill, but Godric completely swept me off my feet, and NO not just his perfect looks….his power (over Eric and everyone else), his soothing voice…(what dialect/accent was that he was using?) and that scene where he was on top of the church and said “enough!!!” and everyone just STOPPED …that too stole my heart and, actually I think it stopped beating for a second, lol.
I want Godric back! Giving him to us then taking him away so quickly is the FIRST thing this show has done to disappoint me. In my eyes TrueBlood is *perfection* …but give me back my Godric!
‘Father, Brother, Child’…..ohh….shewwwww….*faints* awww……
I think that they should bring him back to kill Marryanne because Marryanne is so powerful (hate to admit that)…but it should take Godric’s return to kill her character off. She’s ruining my town and my people, I detest her!!! But I think we’re supposed to.
Who’s with me? Anti Marryanne and lets bring Godric back to kill her off!!!
I have to agree with both memmoch_meg and Victoriathevamp, who has left me with nothing left to say.
Bravo. Great reviews.
I want the attraction between sookie and eric to be more than just the blood. And i think the reason she was with godric is cause of that conection she now has with eric. This episode is my favriote cuase it show alot about kindness and love and devotion just alot of things i cried when eric did this episode i watched one after another cuase it was that good.I LOVE ERIC AND SOOKIE.
Does anyone else think that when Bill talks to sookie sometimes he sounds really mean to her? And i dont think iv ever seen Eric talk to her the way bill does or blame her for anything like bill does, What do other ppl think?
Yeah – he’s a little “I know best” all the time, and gets a real snooty look on his face when she goes against him. Plus it pisses him off that he can’t really tell Eric to take a hike because Eric is his sheriff and 850 years older than him to boot.
I dont think so… he only loves her and his afraid of losing her, the way he express himself some ways are possessive, but Sookie too. I love them together, but I´m liking the Eric-Sookie scene. But love is more than lust!
I like Bill. I think his character is deeply in love with Sookie for the first time in 140years and with her now connection to Eric, he is fearful of loosing her. His statement that it was going to happen because eric was determined to connect with her show how deeply he feels this coming separaton. I think he knows how deep and sexual the bond now is and I think he knows more about the blood bond that Sookie knows. She is already looking at Eric differently. This has to alter her relationship with bill. I think Lorena was right on, by stating that she has already abandoned Bill.
I feel for his character.
I really agree with you!
This episode was wonderful, and really showed different sides of the characters we think we know. Nan Flanagan, who comes off as kind and sweet, not something you would expect in a vampire, is actually pretty cold. This is mirrored by Eric breaking down at Godric’s feet, and Sookie’s dream of a more human Eric.
Something to remember about the bullet-sucking scene, Eric may have tricked Sookie into drinking his blood, but HE TOLD HER AFTERWARDS. If Bill hadn’t come back, Eric probably would have said something along the lines of “Oh, great, thanks. Hey, you swallowed some of my blood now, so we’re bonded and I can feel your emotions. *insert smirk here*”
BUT. Bill never said anything before about having an attraction to the vampire who’s blood she has had. What if Sookie’s attraction to Bill is purely because of his blood in her and the fact that she cannot read his mind. Clever way for Bill to use that fact to make Eric look bad and him look good, but eventually Sookie will put it all together and confront him. Maybe THAT will the be the end of their relationship, since their breakup from the book was based on *BOOK SPOILERS* him having run off with Lorena.
I still think Eric is a conninving sucker.
When Bill gave Sookie his blood it was a life-saving act, whatever his ulteriour motives may have been.
I think Sookie was attracked to Bill before she had his blood, whereas she obviously was repelled by Eric.
I thought the same, but Sookie felt interest for Bill earlier. In Merlotte’s and she even had drunk is blood yet in that ocasion. She became more and more atracted to him! Eric didn´t said nothing… Bill as told her. Eric doesn´t play fair!
I agree Ellen. bill & Sookie were attracted prior to his giving her blood. I think Eric is after Sookie for himself 7 Will kick Bill out of the picture any way he can
I think the dream sequence is eric in her head with the blood bond.
It’s already distanced Sookie & Bill. he knoew
Have any of you even read the books? Bill is no gentleman. Talk about conniving…why did he even come back to Bon Temps to begin with…perhaps someone sent him there?
Maybe you would like to add BOOK SPOILER next time.
Everyone has a right to an opinion. I have read the books and I do still have a good feeling when putting my money on Bill.
Books or show, I have never seen the real appeal of Bill. He’s always just seemed cold and boring to me. I don’t think it was the blood that attracted Sookie to him but simply the fact that he was the first person she couldn’t “hear”.
After reading all the books…I would NEVER put my money on Bill.
*****BOOK SPOILER******
ok, yeah by the end of book 3 you relize Bill is a Dick, but in book 9 he nearly dies saving sookie, and when hes on his death bed he fights side by side with eric against the Fae to protect her, he even whips the crap outs Quinn over sookie. i think Bill has proven that even though he was sent there, he does love sookie.
It doesn’t really makes any sense to become too harsh on Bill. It’s hard for him to take care of Sookie and Eric and Lorena are just good enough reasons to believe this. They are both older than him and therefore stronger, always trying to make him adopt a lifestyle he detests. In adition to this we have Sookie’s caring personality that drives her into all sorts of dangerous situations. I think these things are hard enough to live with, even for a vampire.
And the fact that Bill might not have come to Sookie’s town by chance has nothing to do with he’s feelings for her. We never know who we are going to meet or fall in love with and still we don’t make that seem like a reason to doubt what we feel for someone. Bill is one of the most honest characters and one of the most unhappiest too. He gets trapped in all sorts off situations and gets the blame for it sometimes without deserving it even by his own lover. I think he’s very unlucky. He’s also very smart (remember the way he explained his nature to Sookie in the first episodes?) and has a lot of credit for managing to control himself and return to his human side.
As for this episode, it was just marvelous, the way the characters bonded, and the phylosophy of it all, it really get’s to you. Godric’s suicide and the motives for his entire behavior should really make us think. This show is sometimes deeper than we may believe.
I agree with you at all!
Amen
I totally agree
