Not Staying True to the Book

  • Author: Amara | Category: True Blood News

  • So far the series is straying from the books just a little bit. Is it for good reason? Do you think this is a good idea? I’m really interested in hearing your opinions on what you hope will stay true and what you think HAS to go. As True Blood fanatics we’re very concerned about the things that happen with our favorite characters. Let me know how you feel.

well i haven’t read the books….. but i LOVE LOVE LOVE the show!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. Johnny says:

I haven’t read them either but would love to hear more from you about the similarities/differences. Great post, thanks for bringing us all this great news amara and for the episodes. This site seriously rocks.

    3. plasmaaye says:

The books are G R E A T!!! The HBO show is equally as good! Of course, they are different. It is wonderful to see the differences!! Some things are with the books and some are not and that is what keeps you watching week after week!

    4. Amara says:

I too think it makes it more interesting to not really know whats going to happen next. I hope other fanatics may freak out about changes, but the show stays upbeat and interesting! I love it!

    5. Amara says:

      **other fanatics dont freak out**

    6. Jackie says:

I’ve read part of the second book and I’m so glad Lafayette didn’t die. Sometimes it’s best not to go by the book. Next week there is part of the book. It’s where Scootie and Bill are fighting and she gets out of the car. I will say no more. Love the show.

    7. Kathryn says:

I am on the 7th book right now… and I LOVE THEM. I think it is very interesting to see the differences between the show and book, however there are definitely some things that occur in the books that hopefully will also occur during the show haha! I think if the seasons go book to book then next season will be one of my favs!

    8. Karina says:

I have not read the books but it’s just like making a movie out of a book. Books go into so much more detail and have a way of making it interesting but if they were to do that in a movie or a show people would lose interest. Movies have a much greater need for action all the time than books because the viewer is not imagining things for themselves, it’s presented for them. People often get angry because things are not exactly like the book but it is really hard to take all the stuff in books and make it into something people want to watch and that is an appropriate length. I have always preferred to read a book but have also always appreciated the artistic attempt that goes into making a movie. Don’t get me wrong I love movies and shows but books allow you to create an image that’s all your own. I love this series and am sure I will love the books.

    9. Yolanda says:

I love the fact that the shows are a bit different from the books. It would be boring to know everything that is going to happen just because you read the books. I love Alan and was a huge fan of Six Feet Under. It is amazing how they can add characters and change things around to make it so exciting while still keeping the skeleton of the book intact. It was hard at first to separate the show from the books but I’ve done that and I love them both. I love Sookie and Bills story and Lafayette rocks! All the characters are superb and I’m excited every week to know what will happen next.

    10. SERENA says:

I really lie the books but I am glad there are some different things in the show….However I wish they keep the main plot as it is and not change it completely…….(I hope something strong develops betweenEric and Sookie ,like in the books….)

    11. SCREAMxliza says:

i enjoy the show. i never read the books but i think the show is not the same as the book because it will be more interesting for people who did read the books.

    12. with the season 2, the flow is some king of diffrent like what happen to andy cars, in the book the dead man with a red nail polish was Lafayette but in the season it was the exorcist women, and jessica she’s not included

    13. TrueBlood says:

I’m glad that the show is taking a creative perspective on the story lines. How tedious would it be for the people who read the novels to have everything spelled out for them already?

      By the way, Scootie? XD

    14. K says:

I don’t like the change to the character Tara and her story

    15. Mthld says:

Well, some of the changes are all right, and that they’ve included stories of the side charachters is great. But some things are too much. Like adding Jessica, can’t say that I like it. I hope they won’t change a lot more in the rest of the series.

    16. Jelissa says:

Personally, I LOVE the books, and the series is decent. But DAMN, Sookie Stackhouse in the HBO series is nothing but an arrogant bitch. The cast is really great EXCEPT anna paquin. On the older covers of the books, it has pictures of sookie and bill. Bill was cast pretty well. Sookie just looks like a little girl with no sex appeal whatsoever. And I haven’t read the books in quite a while, but the series hasn’t strayed from the books ‘a little bit’ it’s a little bit of a hella lot. Hopefully the second season got better screenwriters to work on the script because the first season’s script was pretty cruddy -_-

    17. The OTHER White Meat says:

      Jessica. Needs. To. Go. NOW.
Did the screenwriters REALLY have to throw her in there? Really?

So far, all she has done is annoy Pam, Eric, Bill, Sookie, her family, me, you, most of the True Blood fans…
And effed certain parts of Sookie and Bill’s relationship. Like trust. The BIG part. And sex. Don’t forget sex.

    18. Poison says:

Love the books, the series stray a lot from them but I think as of now, if for the best. Lafayette is a really fun character, I like to see more of him and as a potential vampire I think he would keep the show fun. Tara is much more in it too, I’m not sure how I feel about that one >.<’ Sookie is annoying by character so, that’s true to the point.

Jessica…well she’s pretty darn annoying but it help to show Bill’s character more, I think.

Enought about them though, I want to see more of Eric. I hope they stick to the book when he comes around. Then again, I love his little show when he appear in episode two. Wow!!! He’s a real VIking!

So getting down to it, no the show is far from the book but I think it better this way. The direct found good points to stick to and add some to make us (those who read the book) stay on edge, in a good way. I love it!!!

    19. cat says:

I think they added Jessica to replace Bubba.

    20. Yo says:

      THERE ARE BOOKS?!

    21. kathy says:

Cat– do you think? I was wondering if they were going to bring “bubba” in or not but he doesn’t appear in the books til a bit later right? I hope Jessica isn’t around for long however i did like her with hoyt I thought it was a cute twist. I wonder if they did that to affect Jasons story line….

    22. Courtney says:

I have just finished reading all the books and I absolutely love them. I really enjoy the show too, the only thing is i need more Eric !!! I love the actor that plays him and everything I just think they are changing his and Sookies relationship to much. I want more of the funny side of Eric and less of the scary. I would also be really mad if they never got Eric and Sookie together because I love them together !

    23. Corliq says:

I really don’t want there to be anything more than a superficial similarity between the books and the show…I do know that if they remove the Bill and Sookie romance aspect, I will stop watching! Eric and Sookie may have been good together in the books, but it does not work in the tv series. Sookie would be sullied by any romantic association with Eric. The reason Bill and Sookie work well, is because he is clinging to his humanity, whereas I find Eric seedy and violent. The whole first series Sookie struggles with the violence and seediness of the vampire world, but recognises the good in Bill. Why would she be attracted to Eric? He is cruel, cold and completely vampire. You cannot change her character at the core to shoehorn a love triangle from the books into the tv series. Long live Bill and Sookie!!

    24. kathy says:

corliq—This is what can be frustrating about knowing a different side to the characters and wondering what will happen in the show. I won’t drop a bomb on you or other people who haven’t read the books but lets just say there is way more to the story will bill…he isn’t Mr. Nice Guy….There is a strong connection between Eric and Sookie very strong and yes Eric is violent but remember how sookie said she is seeing more and more evil as she opens her mind? Well in the book series Sookie goes through a lot of violent violent things and I think it helps her understand Eric more….Just my perspective… :)

    25. Cheryl says:

You have to remember there would not even be a show if there wasn’t the books……..the show is “based on the Sookie Stackhouse Novels”. They do an amazing job of displaying all the special effects and bringing the show to life, but i would love it if they stuck a little more closely to how things happen in the books…….i know some people may not like that but i can pretty much guarantee that if those people read the books they would love them and soon agree with those who love the books…..Sookie can not be expected to stay exact the same or stay with the same guy for the entire length of the show….it would become monotinous and people crave change and romance and supernatural action!!!!!!!!

    26. Cheryl says:

plus I know alot of girls who want to see Eric as naked as we have seen Bill:):P

    27. kathy says:

lol so true cheryl so true!!! mmmm eric naked lol

    28. cheese says:

I’ve read some of the books and personally just couldn’t get into them. And they get a little farfetched in my opinion, what with Sookie dating every single supernatural creature she lays eyes on and the author introducing random things like weretigers (seriously, wtf?) Sookie and Eric may work together in the book but in the TV show I like her with Bill :P

      • mo says:

first of all sookie does not date every supe (grand total of four- IF you include sam)

she is attracted to supes for the fact that she cant read them as well

they have their own reasons for being attracted to sookie (dont want to do the spoiler thing today will leave it vague)

    29. kathy says:

cheese—there was a reason for the supernatural attraction which was explained later I think it was the 9th book? Up until that though i felt the same way but she also said that dating never worked out for her because she could always hear what they were thinking…she can’t do the same or in the same way with most supernaturals…

    30. Breanne says:

I absolutely enjoyed the books, and i also hope that they have a love interest with Eric and Sookie, every time i watch the show all i can think about is how they are together in the 9th book and it makes me want to speed things up to see if that is what they’re actually going to do. I really hope so, i wouldn’t feel the same way about it if she just stayed around with Bill the whole time.

    31. Mercedes says:

I actually found the books boring after the 4th. I find the show more interest then the books because it does stray quite a bit but its still the same in some places. I really want Sookie and Eric to get together rather then Sookie and Bill because I like Eric better. I want them to end up other in the end.
