True Blood’s Southern Charm: Would You Want To Visit Louisiana?
I have to say, True Blood is one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. There’s something about the Southern setting of the show that charms and haunts me all the same. Maybe it’s the brawling country restaurant Merlotte’s that brings all the dynamic town folk together, or the creaky door of Sookie’s house that has had so much damage done to it. Maybe it’s the warm breeze in the night air that makes you imagine you’ll meet your own Bill. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve also started speaking with a bit of a Southern drawl, and I don’t even live in the States!
I’m so excited the wait for True Blood is over, but I’ve been inspired even more by the show to visit Louisiana. Here are my reasons to visit:
- True Blood takes place there!!
- I’m actually beginning to love the Southern accent!
- Louisiana is the melting pot of the US… in the show too. (All those vampires, shape shifters and werewolves in one place!!)
What effect has True Blood had on you? Are ya’ll super fans like me, too? Would You Want To Visit Louisiana?

I love the accent too! In the begining of the show, though, I hated it, i thought it was annoying for some reason…
Are you talking about Arlene’s murderer boyfriend who was using the acting tapes to learn a Southern drawl? Because I do not think that it would be as easy as that. I would have a very hard time, and I am musically inclined… hmmm.
It’s obvious that you haven’t visited the US if you think Louisiana is the melting pot. While it does have several cultures, to a large extent the different cultures state separate and do a whole lot of close mixing.
As for my opinion on the topic, I like the show and the books despite the setting. Sorry, but it’s true!
sorry, I meant to say: to a large extent, the different cultures stay separate and don’t do as much mixing as you think. The north eastern areas and California is where you’ll find the true multiculturalism.
Actually I have visited the States, both California, but New Orleans a few times. I don’t know if you live there, but from my experiences I noticed that there was a variety of cultures in New Orleans. Black, White, South Asian, not East Asian, but for the most part, including the cuisine down there, it can all be found. All I noticed in California was White, Hispanic and Asian. But then again, those were just my experiences, my opinions.
And when I say “melting pot” I don’t mean interracial mixing, I mean that there are several cultures to be found there. Can we try being less defensive next time, it’s just an opinion post for goodness sakes.
By the way, how is it that you don’t like the setting when this is one of the most important aspects of the novel?? After all, it’s called the Southern vampire mystery.
WELL I AM SORRY But I have lived in Shreveport just about my whole life And know alot of ah, northerers they live here and still don’t get it ! As far as a mixing pot, history books tell us where the biggest mixing pot is ! Come To Madri Gras that alone will show you the very many very old culturs coming together !
Yeah I got to admit I wasn’t the biggest South fan before this show whenever I would someone described as ‘having the Southern charm’ I would be like ‘What?! What Southern charm!’. Plus I did not have a lot of admiration for them because of the whole Civil War thing. But TrueBloood has opened my eyes to the real South! If I ever visit America I’m sure as heck gonna check out Louisiana!
just gotta say north south east west doesn’t matter it is how u were raised!!!!! hopefully the upcoming generation gets it!
i was raised in Philly, to parents the were prejudiced by anything different. Moved to S Jersey ( no we are nothing like the jersey shore:)) My parents are coming around
still not there but at least their kids r ok
i love whatever state i visit.. I am the visitor!
I live in Louisiana, and True Blood definitely “gets” some of what makes this state so special. Some of it is a little overdone, but that’s part of the charm of the show. I think the accents are a bit exaggerated, but I appreciate the effort! The South has it’s own struggles, there is no doubt about it, but there is a lot of heart here. Despite the annoying reputation that seems to haunt us from the Civil War and the tension of the civil rights movement– that’s just not an accurate depiction of us anymore. Louisiana is RIPE with culture. People here savor life, the food, the music, dancing, family, the land– you name it. I think that’s why True Blood set here is so perfect. Vampires are attracted to life, vitality– and we definitely have that here. If you ever get the chance to visit Louisiana, you should. There is no state in the South like it, and you will definitely fall in love with it. Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Let the good times roll, as the Cajuns say.)
Anyway, not to toot our own horn, just thought I’d weigh in with a local’s perspective.
i am from Louisiana too. South Louisiana to be exact but i did live in Jena and Chopin both up north i love true blood to the fullest and i agree if you get the chance to visit you should you will love it. This show keeps getting better and better..
